I’m sure you all know I’m a huge fan of Alpinestars’ technical gear. The build quality is excellent, you can tell they spend a lot of time focused on making the product work. Styling, durability, function and safety are all considered and delivered very well, for every product I’ve tested.

Enter the Alpinestars Charger R Backpack, and again, they haven’t disappointed. There are so many features to this bag its hard to know where to start. Above all, it is very comfortable to use, which is something to consider when you’re choosing a bag to use on the bike. The shoulder straps are easy to adjust, even with gloves on. There is a waist strap and buckle that goes across the chest to keep the shoulder straps on, even in a heavy wind. There are also a couple of pockets in the waist straps, very useful for stowing keys and cash. I have found that some bags tend to slip off the shoulder when worn with one strap, not so with this bag, it stays put which I like a lot. The straps come together at the top in such a way that they form a useful handle at the top.

The material feels quite tough and there’s a shell on the front of the bag. In all honesty, I can’t see the shell standing up to much impact, a back protector this is not. Saying that, I do think it would help to protect your belongings in a slide. The back pad is very comfortable and breathable, very welcome.

There are two main compartments which have inner pockets for laptops and other stuff/contraband. They aren’t the most spacious pockets around but I think that’s kind of the point, you wouldn’t want a load of weight-bearing down on your wrists (if you’re on a sports bike) on a long journey. There’s enough space for the essentials but you will need more storage if you’re packing for a longer trip.

I love the waterproof outer shell that comes with it. Easy and quick to slip over the bag. There are anchor points to keep it attached but don’t expect it to stay put or be very effective at speed. This can be stowed in a ‘secret’ pocket at the bottom of the bag. There is also a net which comes out of the pocket and clips onto the front of the bag. Its looks to be able to accommodate a helmet but I wouldn’t suggest it, it could be good for carrying a small sleeping bag or wet gear instead of inside the bag.

In terms of styling, the form is great but it is all black. You might like that or you might think it should have some bright colours or reflective strips to make you easier to see, that one is down to what you like. I’m not into fluorescent tabards but I do think some reflective beading would have been a good idea. All of the adjustable straps and compartments have tags that make it possible to adjust or open them with gloves on, fantastic.

Final opinion – it’s a great bag, very useful, durable and it looks great too.
