Rogue Mag Music - Bleech 'Nude' album review

BLEECH RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ‘NUDE’ ON JUNE 5th VIA BILLIE RECORDS

Evoking the sounds of Hole and Ash, Bleech’s ‘The Worthing Song’, the first track of their new album ‘Nude’, is jammed with tight riffs, beautifully layers vocals and just the right amount of raw edge without being too lo-fi.

Avoiding the cliche of dipping too deeply into introspective lyrics and screaming vocals, Jennifer O’Neill (guitar/lead vocals) delivers an even flow. Tuneful enough but not so polished to sound like pop. Bleech keep up the pace throughout, its nice to hear songs simply but effectively written. There’s no fret wanking here, and the ‘Nude’ is all the better for it.

There’s not a low of new ideas here, if thats what you’re looking for you’re probably going to be disappointed. However, ‘new’ doesn’t always translate as ‘good’. This is a solid album, it’s very reminiscent of the 90’s but I don’t think thats a bad thing. Katherine (O’Neill – Bass/Vocals) and Matt Bick (Drums/Vocals) bring up the rhythm section brilliantly, never too much, always exactly what the track requires.

Flowerhands introduces some soothing strings and lowers the pace for a nice interval, the pace is back on with ‘Break My Nose’ and carries on throughout the rest of the album. I’d have thought ‘Adrenaline Junkie’ would have been a bit more raw but ‘I Wanna Be Me’ helps forget that with sing-along lyrics along with the meaty intro to ‘Dancing Without You’.

Nude isn’t ground breaking and it’s not going to be the most influential album out this year. Bleech are following a well trodden road but don’t get me wrong, this is a great collection of songs.

Buy this album, leave it in your car and fall in love as Bleech become the soundtrack to your summer.

Bleech will be supporting Ash’s at their 20th birthday gig at London’s Garage on June 17th. Hosted by long time fan and comedian Josie Long, Ash will present a one of a kind birthday show that will see all three rooms filled with film and music.
