After wrapping up the Welsh event, the second stop of the King of the Groms series was on the West coast of Ireland in the little village of Rossnowlagh, 8 miles north of the famous surfing town Bundoram. With small waves on offer, the Groms were pumped to get the event underway! Two feet and slight onshore conditions meant it was perfect for the little Irish ripper and last year’s winner, Geariod McDaid. He was showing great form after his win in Peru at the world games (over Australian champion and relative to Joel Parkinson the Aussie champ Darel Parkinson noetheless).
the girls kicked off with a great start from all four of the Irish girls. 1st position went to Eva Martin who stole the show with strong power turns and smooth style. Coming 2nd was Una Britton, 3rd for Sophie Scott and 4th going to Meady McCloskey.
Then came the under 16’s, five guys competing strongly for the pole position. Gearoid McDaid took advantage of the conditions which suited his goofy stance, making the most of the small left handers to come 1st. 2nd went to Daniel Britton, 3rd to Jack Scott, 4th to Garbhan and Prahran O’Neil in at 5th.
Next stop is at Croyde in Devon in a few weeks where the final 6 will be chosen to compete at Fistral Beach in August.
