Sri Lankan local surfers score some brand new boards

For the second year in a row Sri Lankan local surfers have been gifted brand new high performance Firewire surfboards thanks to Coastalwatch and ASP Australasia. With no local surfboard surfboard shapers in Sri Lanka, brand new boards are a rarity. Most surfers have to rely on trading goods for used boards or fixing broken boards left behind by the many tourists that visit the tropical isle.

Dane Jordan ASP Australasia General Manager has seen the surfers in Sri Lanka progress rapidly in skill level and excitement about the sport in the past few years and is glad to be a part of that.

“The Arugam Bay locals are some of the nicest surfers on the planet,” Jordan said. “They share their local break with us for the competition and if we can help them out with some new boards it’s the least we can do. There’s no better feeling than helping out young surfers who can’t afford new equipment, they’re stoked and so are we.”

Organizers of the SriLankan Airlines Pro and ASP Australasia also paid to have 10 of the Arugam Bay local boys to have the training to become ISA accredited surf coaches. This accreditation is internationally recognised and will give their surf school credibility and will allow these surfers to travel internationally and have the qualifications to continue surf coaching. The course also teaches them the business side of surf coaching, putting all the tools in their hands to help build a business that will benefit the local community.

ASP Australasia have also donated two lifeguard rescue tubes to the local lifesavers after learning that over 300 rescues had been made with the lifeguarding equipment that was donated last year.

Coastalwatch Surfboards Abroad is partnered by Firewire Surfboards, Surfing World and ASP Australasia to make a difference in surfing communities.
