Tom Williams and the Boat

In a music scene dominated by dub-step and electro infused pop it’s refreshing to hear an LP like ‘Teenage Blood’, with its traditional alt rock sound, jangly guitar and in particular its beautiful violin which portray the anguish in the songs perfectly. It’s hard to find an instrument that evokes such feelings and stir such emotions. Williams’ sorrowful vocal is also more than capable of doing just that with his acute narration of the trials and tribulations and love lost.

There’s an air of Robert Smith about Williams’ and ‘Too Young’ with its understated lyrics and guitar led chorus could easily fit on to any ‘Cure’ album. It also draws similarities lyrically, with its lyrics of the confusion and uncertainty that young love brings. ‘Little Bit In Me’ sees Williams’ turn to modern day storyteller, portraying family and friends’ modern day struggle to make ends meet. The lyrics ‘distraught after the death of my Father, nothing left, nothing to lose’ are particularly poignant, underlining the bleakness and despondency of modern day life.

Tom Williams is evidently a very capable songwriter and captures the mood of each track brilliantly. It is a very well produced LP largely down to the fact that is not over-produced and each track does what it sets out to do without trying too hard. The vast majority of music today lacks depth and is simply made to top charts and make money. An album like ‘Teenage Blood’ therefore makes a welcome change in the world of manufactured bands, and it may not be one for the masses, but that’s not always a good thing anyway.

Teenage Blood is out now.
