Rogue Mag - Two amateurs take on the British Bobsleigh Championships in Austria

In March 2013, Team Volvo, compromising of two members of the British Bobsleigh team and two amateurs, went head to head with the bobsleigh elite in the British Bobsleigh Championships. Competition was tough with teams like GBR 1, currently ranked 5th in the world, the armed forces’ teams with British Bobsleigh Athletes, and privateer entries. After only two days of training at Team GBs’ track in Bath under the guidance of Lee Johnston, Team GB Coach, the group traveled to Igls in Austria to put learning into practice and their trust on the ice.

“You will be traveling at 80mph… and will feel like you’ve sat four times your body weight on your head”

commented Lee Johnston on the morning of the run. Despite the amateurs’ showing signs of nervousness, Team Volvo got through the track with merit and ended up winning bronze with a combined time of 1:49:46.
