Who are you?
Avery Watts

How would you describe your music, your style?
It is, to the fan and appreciator of the sound, everything you want to hear.

What led you to want to write lyrics from a positive angle and do you feel that fits with an aggressive music style?
I feel it’s the perfect marriage of “have your cake and eat it too.” You get this raw aggressive sound that charges you up and makes you pumped to take on the planet; then the message being fed into your head is one of construction – as opposed to destruction. Negativity has no longevity and positivity is timeless. When you sing a song about striving to be your best: that’s a message which has existed since the beginning of time and will continue to exist as long as human beings roam the earth. However, being angry at your girlfriend/parents/fill-in-a-person-here or talking about how hard you party will always become irrelevant at some point in life. I only write about what I truly believe in, and will always continue to believe in. There’s got to be nothing worse than performing a song 10, 20, 30 years down the road about a topic you have absolutely no attachment to. That’s disingenuous, fraudulent, and makes it impossible for you to truly stand by your body of work as an artist.

You write the music and play all instruments on your album, what made you decide to do things this way?
Necessity is the mother of invention: I had been spearheading a band for many years that had your typical amount of member changes, deficiencies, and laziness across the board. I spent more time giving pep talks and rally speeches than I did playing music. Throughout time, I took interest in every aspect of the creation process; From writing, playing each instrument, producing, engineering, mixing, mastering, and even creating the supporting media such as artwork, web design, graphic design, video editing, and so on. I already had a background in creative writing, cinematography, and was a sponsored extreme athlete (skateboarding & snowboarding) – so I poured all of those elements into one big pot to create what I wanted. The problem is that nobody else could seemingly keep up with the standards I set for myself and for the success of the band. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling like I had to run at the collective speed of a group instead of running as fast as I could on my own. “A Cut Above” was really the catalyst to realizing I could walk into a studio and single-handedly now come out with a finished song without any outside influence, help, or assistance on any level. Frankly, once you can do that, you never go back. My style had changed, my intensity had greatened, and I had really discovered a sound and style I could call my own. It’s nice every once and a while to bounce a thought off of someone, but to never have to explain the ideas in your head and simply just execute them is invaluable.

ESPN said you were “500 CC’s of Full Throttle Rock” really? Only 500CC’s?
Maybe they need to get educated on exactly how many CC’s you can have! Haha. Unfortunately, I don’t make up the titles, I just roll with them.

What do you do when you’re not working on your music?
Learn everything I can all day, every day, about everything possible in life – I’m a big advocate of strengthen the mind. When I’m not learning, I hit the gym or play sports to strengthen the body. I grew up riding motocross bikes, ATV’s, skateboarding, and snowboarding (with a short-lived, one-win BMX career somewhere in there) – so I try to do any and all of them whenever I can. My dad was actually a Kawasaki factory motocross rider and has a trophy room the size of most people’s apartments, so I have to stay up on my game! Haha.

The Takeover LP is out this September, What can you tell us about your upcoming album?
It’s raw, it’s brutal, it’s honest, and it’s bound to change lives – for better or worse.

It looks like you’ve had a lot of success since 2010, where are you hoping to go with this?
All the way to the top…then beyond.
